Have you ever seen someone wearing an outfit that you LOVE and immediately think to yourself,  ” I could never pull that off”. We have all been there, but whyyyyy do we think that!?  I’ll tell you why. Society has convinced us we can’t pull off specific styles based on the beauty standards they feed us in the media. Understanding your body type and dressing accordingly can enhance your look and boost your confidence but it’s not the only important thing when creating a personal style. This week we are talking about how to dress for different body types, gaining confidence in your personal style, and the fashion standards society sets for us.

Different Body Types And How To Enhance Your Shape

Fashion designers and brands often tailor their creations to various body types to ensure everyone can find clothes that make them look and feel their best. The main body types are generally categorized as apple, pear, hourglass, and rectangle. Each type has its unique characteristics, and fashion adapts to these by offering different cuts, fabrics, and styles that flatter specific features.

  • Apple Shape: Carry weight around the midsection. Aim for clothes that draw attention to your arms and legs, such as V-neck tops and A-line dresses.
  • Pear Shape: Wider hips and thighs with a smaller upper body. Focus on enhancing your shoulders and waist with boat neck tops and fit-and-flare skirts.
  • Hourglass Shape: Balanced bust and hips with a defined waist. Highlight your curves with wrap dresses and tailored pieces.
  • Rectangle Shape: Evenly proportioned bust, waist, and hips. Create curves with belted waists and peplum tops.

I often like to say once you know the rules, you can figure out the best way to break them. “Dressing for your body type” is great if you want to conform to the ideal body shape idea that society sets for us. But if you don’t care about being conventionally attractive, literally throw these rules out!! We are entering an era of body confidence, accepting all shapes and sizes and you should be able to express your creativity at any size or shape if YOU feel confident doing that. I think it’s important to understand your body shape and the ‘dressing for your body’ ideology so that when you see a new fashion trend you can consciencely make the choice knowing it might not flatter your body shape but still choose to do it anyway based on your personality or creativity.

Gaining Confidence in Dressing Creatively

Once you know what suits your body type, you can start experimenting and adding personal flair to your outfits. Here are some tips to help you gain confidence in dressing creatively:

  1. Start with Basics: Build a wardrobe with essential pieces that flatter your body type. Once you have a strong foundation, it’s easier to mix and match creatively with new trendy items.

2.Incorporate Colors and Patterns: Don’t shy away from bold colors and patterns. If you’re new to this, start with accessories like scarves or handbags before moving on to larger pieces like dresses or coats. I’m loving the “loud fashion” trends that’s happening right now.

3. Accessorize Wisely: Accessories can transform a simple outfit into a fashion statement. Play with jewelry, belts, and hats to add interest to your look.

4. Layering: Layering can add depth and dimension to your outfit. Try layering different textures and lengths to see what combinations work best for you.

5. Follow Fashion Influencers: Look for inspiration from fashion bloggers and influencers who share your body type. They often offer tips and outfit ideas that you can adapt to your style.

6. Experiment and Reflect: Fashion is about self-expression, so don’t be afraid to try new things. Take photos of your outfits and reflect on what makes you feel good. Over time, you’ll develop a personal style that’s both flattering and uniquely yours.

Embrace your body, experiment with styles, and remember that confidence is the key to looking fabulous despite what society tells you is inherently attractive. When you feel good in what you wear, it shows, and that’s the essence of a true fashion statement <3
