The Three Hair Treatments Our Stylists at Moss Hair Salon Swear By for Healthier, Shinier Hair

Hey, everyone! I'm Meg Ann Lee. I'm a co-owner at Moss Hair Salon, and I want to share why hair treatments aren't just an "extra" part of your routine-they're essential. Think of them like vitamins for your hair. While shampoos and conditioners keep your scalp and strands clean, targeted treatments go deeper to repair, hydrate, and protect. Today, let's dive into our three top treatments we swear by here at Moss: Amika Soul Food Mask, Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask, and Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate Leave-In Treatment.

Ariel's Favorite: Amika Soul Food Nourishing Mask

If your hair has been feeling dry or lifeless, the Amika Soul Food Nourishing Mask is a lifesaver. Infused with Jojoba Seed Oil and Sea Buckthorn, it's packed with vitamins and nutrients to deeply hydrate and bring back softness. Here's how to use it:

  • After shampooing, apply a generous amount of Soul Food from mid-length to ends (avoid the roots to keep from weighing it down).
  • Leave it on for 5-7 minutes. For extra impact, wrap your hair in a warm towel to help the ingredients penetrate more effectively.
  • Rinse thoroughly, and voilà-hello, softer, shinier hair!

Ariel recommends using this mask once a week, especially if your hair is colored or tends to be on the drier side.

April's Favorite: Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask

Ever notice your hair starting to look frizzy or lackluster ? The Amika Flash mask can help! The Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask is a quick, rinse-out treatment designed to boost your hair's shine, smoothness, and manageability in just 60 seconds. It's great for all hair types, especially those prone to dullness or frizz. This treatment contains Red Algae extract known for its ability to deeply hydrate. This ingredient helps to smooth the hair's cuticle for a sleek finish. It also contains amino acids and UV filters.

Here's how to use it:

  • Apply the Flash Instant Shine Mask after you rinse out your shampoo. Work product evenly throughout your hair, from roots to ends. You can apply it with your fingers or a wide-toothed comb to ensure even distribution.
  • Leave the product in for at least 60 seconds. You can leave it a bit longer if your hair needs extra conditioning, but one minute is usually enough.
  • Rinse thoroughly with warm (not hot) water to retain the hair's natural shine and moisture.

April recommends using the Flash Instant Shine Mask 1-2 times per week to maintain shine and smoothness and every time you come in for a cut or color. With regular use, you'll get a glassy shine and a super-smooth finish that makes your hair look healthy and vibrant in a flash!

Megan's Favorite: Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate Leave-In Treatment

One of our powerhouse treatments, Redken's Acidic Bonding Concentrate Leave-In is all about strengthening and restoring damaged hair. This treatment works to repair weak or brittle hair, making it more resilient to heat, styling, and environmental stress. Here's how we recommend using it:

  • After washing, apply a small amount to towel-dried hair, focusing on areas that feel the most fragile.
  • Leave it in-no need to rinse-and style as usual.
2024 600

Megan recommends this line for all color treated hair and her blonde clients. The acidic pH level in this treatment helps reinforce bonds within your hair, so it stays strong, smooth, and less prone to breakage. It's all about science!

Bringing It All Together

Incorporating these treatments into your routine at least once a week can make a world of difference. Each of these products targets different concerns-moisture, frizz control, and strength-so using them in combination (at different times) keeps your hair looking and feeling its best. Your hair will thank you!

Need more guidance on which treatment is best for you? Book a consultation or an appointment at Moss Hair Salon, and we'll help you build a treatment routine tailored to your hair goals <3

Cedar Crest Continues 30+ Year Support Of 4-H

Cedar Crest Continues 30+ Year Support Of 4-H

The Wisconsin 4-H Foundation recently recognized partner Cedar Crest Ice Cream as a top 4-H donor. Acknowledged as a Platinum Clover supporter, Cedar Crest Ice Cream contributed $10,000 to support Wisconsin 4-H programs. Cedar Crest Ice Cream has been an ardent supporter of Wisconsin 4-H for over 30 years.

“We are proud to give back by supporting and empowering youth development, through our partnership with the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation,” says President Ken Kohlwey. “The Wisconsin 4-H Foundation has a significant impact on youth personal growth and leadership. We are honored to take part in cultivating the next generation.”

Since 1914, Wisconsin 4-H has helped young people develop the skills required for a changing world. Growing out of a rich history of agricultural clubs, today’s 4-H has expanded to include STEM, healthy living, and communications.

“Cedar Crest helps 4-H create cutting-edge, relevant programs for young people to learn real-world skills that will prepare them for the challenges of today and tomorrow,” says Wisconsin 4-H Foundation Executive Director Brenda Scheider.

Nearly 150,000 youth participate in the Wisconsin 4-H program each year, and more than 22,000 volunteers support the program.

Miller Earns National Recognition

Miller Earns National Recognition

Melanie Miller, a widely recognized leader in Wisconsin’s 4-H community, has achieved a significant milestone in her career: induction into the National 4-H Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony took place in Boise, Idaho, where Miller joined 15 others in the class of 2024. Known for her dedication and contributions, Miller’s impact has resonated with youth, families, and educators across Wisconsin.

Reflecting on her career, Miller remarked, “It’s an honor to see how 4-H continues to foster life skills that kids carry forward.” She emphasized the lasting value of the 4-H program, especially in teaching youth the importance of teamwork, goal-setting, and connecting across generations.

Miller’s journey began in Barron County, where she was raised in a family with over 100 years of 4-H involvement. Her commitment to 4-H grew as she pursued education and extension work. She eventually served as a 4-H agent in Sauk and Dunn Counties. “My roots in Barron County set the foundation,” she shared. “From my earliest days, 4-H was a part of my life.”

After completing her master’s degree, Miller joined Wisconsin’s state 4-H staff. She took on various roles that evolved alongside changes in extension programs. “Initially, I focused on agricultural projects. Later I moved into personnel support and even taking an interim directorship at our state 4-H Camp,” Miller explained. “Each role taught me something unique and gave me a deeper appreciation for our mission.”

Miller’s contributions extended far beyond administrative roles. Known for her involvement in state fairs, livestock judging, and community events, Miller became a familiar face at 4-H gatherings statewide. She highlighted her involvement as meaningful experiences. “There’s something special about watching young people excel in showmanship — it’s a skill they carry for life.”

Now inducted into the Hall of Fame, Miller shared advice for new 4-H agents, especially those unfamiliar with 4-H’s long-standing traditions. “A community 4-H club is a unique environment where young people work with peers and mentors of all ages. It’s where they build confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills that they’ll use forever,” she emphasized.

How to Stay Healthy This Winter

Winter time is on it's way. The kids are in school. It's getting colder. That means sick season is coming too. Here are my top tips to keeping your immune system fully functioning this winter season.

Diet

One of the best ways to boost your immune system is through your diet. Eat healthy, whole foods. Remember the phrase, "you are what you eat?" Well that definitely applies here. Here are some simple immune boosting foods.

  • yogurt
  • Oats
  • Chicken soup (see my previous blog posts for my homemade broth recipe)
  • Tumeric
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Ginger
  • Kale
  • Bell Peppers
  • Broccoli
  • Eggs
  • Mushrooms

This is just to name a few. I could go on and on. Just think healthy and you'll be ok.

Tea

Our household is a tea house. We drink herbal tea every night before bed. My favorite immune boosting teas you can get right here in Eau Claire at my shop Black Kettle Tea are Immunity Potion and The Cure. Immunity Potion is great to boost the immune system and The Cure helps get you through any cold.

IMG_8511

Sleep

Getting enough sleep is so important. When you sleep your body released cytokines, which are proteins that help regulate your immune system. Your body also produced T-cells in your sleep which are white blood cells that help fight off infection.

Stay Hydrated

Water is important because our blood and lymph, which have immune cells in them, need water in order to circulate throughout our bodies.

Wash Your Hands

Teach your kids about proper hand washing. They pick up tons of germs throughout the day. Regular hand washing ensures we aren't carrying the germs around with us.

Here's to a healthy and happy winter

Cheers!

Thrifted Finds: How You Can Mix and Match Trends To Create a Personal Style and Fun Outfits

Hey everyone, it's Meg Ann Lee. If you have been reading my blog for a while, you KNOW thrifting is where I find MOST of my key, favorite clothing items. This fall, I've found some thrifted treasures that I'm pairing with more modern staples to create the perfect seasonal looks. Thrifted items are not only budget-friendly but also help me stay eco-conscious.  The best part is that no one else will have the exact same outfit!

Here are a few of my styling tips, inspired by my own wardrobe, to help you elevate your fall/winter style using thrifted finds.

Layer with Texture

One of my favorite ways to create dimension and warmth is by layering different textures. For instance, I thrifted an oversized vintage leather jacket that I love to wear over a ribbed turtleneck. Pair this with plaid or printed leggings and ankle boots for an edgy, yet polished look. Texture mixing instantly adds interest to your outfit-think about layering soft knits with harder textures like denim or leather.

 Accessorize with Vintage

Accessories are where thrifted pieces really shine. This season, we are really seeing a lot of vintage scarves and structured bags hitting the style bloggers pages. A silk scarf tied around your neck or even wrapped around the handle of your bag can elevate any casual look. A thrifted belt can also add shape to an oversized coat or sweater, giving you that coveted hourglass silhouette. Don't forget about jewelry-vintage statement earrings are making a comeback, and they're perfect for adding a little sparkle to your outfit.

Play with Proportions

Proportions are key when mixing thrifted items with current trends. A tip I swear by? Pair oversized with fitted. For example, I recently found a fitted polo shirt that I am pairing with oversized barrel jeans.

This balance creates an effortlessly cool vibe that looks intentional, even if you just threw it together.

 Developing Your Personal Style

When it comes to creating your own personal style, don't be afraid to experiment and have fun with it! Your wardrobe should reflect your personality. I recommend paying attention to the pieces that make you feel confident and comfortable. Take note of the silhouettes, colors, and fabrics that you gravitate toward, and slowly build around that. Style is all about feeling like the best version of yourself, and thrifted pieces allow you to tell your own story in a way that's completely unique.

Mixing and matching thrifted finds isn't just about creating outfits-it's about curating a look that's uniquely yours. What are your favorite ways to style your thrifted pieces this season? Let's inspire each other!

Last Minute Costumes

Halloween is right around the corner. Downtown trick-or-treating in Eau Claire is this weekend. Maybe you're the parent who doesn't dress up for Halloween, but let's be real. That's no fun. Here are some last minute Halloween costume ideas for the grown ups so they can join the Halloween fun. I'm not talking "last minute" costumes that actually take hours to make either. I'm talking 5 minutes of effort.

Black Cat

Who doesn't have black in their closet? This costume is so simple. Just wear all black, draw on some whiskers and find some cat ears at Wal-Mart to complete the look.

black cat

Kim Possible

Who didn't love this cartoon growing up? And now it's easier than ever to put a costume together. You just need a black top, cargo pants and combat boots. A red wig is a bonus if you don't already have red hair.

kim-possible-split-2-2000-e0a46c00d4ca44db9d44b0bce3001b84

Casey Becker

It's so easy to put together this iconic character's look. You know? The first character to die in the Scream franchise? Throw on a beige sweater, jeans and a blonde bob wig. Carry around a fake knife if you really want to be recognizable.

Casey Becker

Greaser

This one's for the dads. It doesn't get easier than this 9050's inspired costume. Throw on black jeans, a white tee and a pair of black sneakers. Add a leather jacket to really take it up a notch.

greaser

Now get out there and dress up with your kids. It's so much fun and will get them in the spirit of Halloween!
