When people imagine a career behind the chair, they might think it’s all about cutting, coloring, and styling hair. While that’s a big part of the job, being a co-owner of a salon means my day is a whole mix of creativity, business strategy, and client care. I’m Meg Ann Lee, a hairstylist and makeup artist in the Eau Claire area and this week I’m giving you a behind the scenes look at my day job.
Morning Hustle: Prepping the Salon and Setting the Tone
The day starts early, before the first client even walks in. We all like to get to the salon a bit early to ensure everything’s set up-think fresh towels folded, aroma diffuser on, and maybe a cute OOTD selfie in front of our MASSIVE MIRROR at moss.
One saying I’ve always heard is “whatever is going on in your personal life, leave it at the door”. It’s so true! Time in the salon is about the clients, not about you as a stylist. So, it’s important to start the day with positive energy because that energy is what greets each client who walks through the door.
Appointments, Consultations, and Creative Flow
Once the day’s officially started, it’s back-to-back appointments. I could be doing anything from a root retouch on a regular client to a bold transformation color for someone looking for a big change. Every client brings a new creative opportunity, and each one has their own story and style, which keeps me on my toes. I try to balance my time well, fitting in consultations with first-time clients who want to discuss ideas before committing, all while managing my regulars’ styling needs.
Running the Business: It’s More Than Just Hair
As a co-owner, with two other bad ass business women, there’s always an added layer of responsibility to ensure we make the salon runs smoothly. It’s about making smart business decisions without sacrificing the quality of the client experience. Having a team you can trust, bounce ideas off of and depend on is KEY.
Services We Offer at Moss
We offer a ton of different hair services at Moss between the three of us. You can check that out on VAGARO. Check out my hair color appointment breakdowns below on TikTok
Working as a co-owner in a salon means wearing a lot of different hats-hairstylist, social media manager, cleaner, and even a bit of a therapist! ( Good thing I have my bachelor’s degree in Psychology :x)
Every day is unique, full of creative challenges and rewarding moments. Whether it’s crafting a fresh look for a client or watching our small business grow, I wouldn’t trade it for anything <3
